The Story of Nautical Bean® Oceanside

In 1994, Captain John M. Alvarez, a seasoned mariner fresh from a coffee expo, had a vision: to create a true waterfront coffeehouse where people could enjoy exceptional coffee while soaking in the sights and sounds of the sea.

Three months later, that vision became reality.

Nautical Bean® Coffee Company, Inc. opened its doors in a former surf shop at 240 Harbor Drive South in Oceanside Harbor — just 10 feet from the water’s edge and one block west of the world-famous South Jetty surf spot. What began as a vacant retail space was transformed into a welcoming 40-foot counter coffeehouse that perfectly blends New England coastal charm with classic Southern California surf culture.

Surrounded by bobbing boats, playful sea lions, and the iconic red-and-white lighthouse, Nautical Bean quickly became a beloved community anchor and a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike. The “blue-sky” location in Oceanside Harbor, opened in 1964, sits at the heart of one of California’s most vibrant waterfront areas, offering sportfishing, whale-watching, kayaking, paddleboarding, and stunning harbor views.

For 32 years, Nautical Bean has remained proudly family-owned. We’ve grown alongside Oceanside’s thriving tourism scene while staying true to our roots: serving carefully crafted beverages made from the world’s finest beans in a setting that feels like a warm embrace by the sea.
